Research Project

Background

This Research Project was born in the academic year 2021-2022, when a reflection process regarding the research began, thanks to the suggestion made by Pope Francis' Apostolic Constitution Veritatis gaudium.

The document revealed the fact that:

In this effort, the worldwide network of ecclesiastical universities and faculties is called to offer the decisive contribution of leaven, salt and light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the living Tradition of the Church, which is ever open to new situations and ideas. (Veritatis Gaudium; 3, c).

The occasion of the upcoming 40th Anniversary of the University in the Rector's Council presents us with the opportunity of fulfilling the Pope's wish.

With the aim of involving everyone in the process, the project has started from listening to the professors, who were invited to provide their suggestions on desirable research themes and methods, within a general framework.

The overall aim is to promote collaborative, interdisciplinary or trans-disciplinary, international research, in partnership with other pontifical, Catholic and lay universities, focused on themes of evangelizing value impact.

Creating Network

Hence, were created focus groups composed by professors from different fields, in order to promote and encourage dialogue between the Faculties. This promoted the creation of an environment in which professors had the opportunity to interact, exchange ideas and conceive strategic research topics for the future of the University. Through these multidisciplinary exchanges, the focus groups also contributed to the creation of new partnerships. A final document was drawn up, including all the different contributions and  priorities highlighted by the professors.

In the 2022 - 2023 academic year, the first Call for projects was held. As a result, 13 projects were presented which are involving 38 institutions from 17 different countries, for a total of 60 professors from our University and 49 from other academic institutions. Thus, the following 3 research groups were chosen by the Scientific Committee (made up of internal and external professors at the University):

The second Call for Projects started in September 2023 and submissions were accepted until February 2024. The evaluation of the new research project was submitted on May 2024. Thus, there were selected 4 new research groups:

On April 12th and 13th, 2024, the expert meeting of the Research Group 'Towards a Theology of Evangelization' took place. The meeting aimed to highlight how mutations in the image of God represent one of the main issues of interest for a theology of evangelization.

Presentation by the organizers: In his essay 'Afternoon of Christianity,' Tomas Halík states that "sometimes, people sitting in the same pew in church profess the same creed but have very different ideas of God." It is necessary to examine these "images," starting with those presented to us by Sacred Scripture throughout the historical span of salvation, particularly starting from the Revelation that comes from the mouth of Jesus of Nazareth (Mazzinghi).

On 29 February 2024, the results of an international survey on youth, values and religion were presented, promoted by the Footprints Research Group. Young People: Expectations, Ideals, Beliefs of the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome, together with seven other universities around the world, with the support of the Spanish agency GAD3.

In order to measure the state of religiosity and faith among young people, the survey took place in November and December 2023 in eight countries: Argentina, Brazil, Italy, Kenya, Mexico, the Philippines, Spain and the United Kingdom. The sample consisted of 4,889 young people between the ages of 18 and 29. Among the most relevant findings is the increase for spirituality among young people worldwide.

Interest in spirituality among young people is growing worldwide: this is one of the findings of a survey conducted by the Research Group Footprints Research Group. Young People: Expectations, Ideals, Beliefs of the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, in collaboration with the Spanish polling institute GAD3, which was presented on February 29, 2024, at 10:45 am at the University (Aula Álvaro del Portillo).

The analysis took place during November and December 2023 and was conducted in 8 countries: Argentina, Brazil, Italy, Kenya, Mexico, the Philippines, Spain, and the United Kingdom. The sample consists of 4,889 young people aged between 18 and 29 years old.

On Friday, February 23rd, 2024, a work meeting was convened with Andrea Rodríguez Prat, a researcher and the Director of the Institute Cultura y Pensamiento at the Barcelona International University of Catalonia, as the special guest.

The primary focus of the meeting was to discuss the improvement of best practices and information regarding the core curriculum.
